Julie Morgan AM
Welsh Labour politician and distinguished supporter of Humanism
Julie Morgan has a degree in English and a postgraduate diploma in Social Administration, and worked as a social worker and an assistant director of Barnardo’s before entering Parliament, where she served as MP for Cardiff North from 1997 – 2010. She was a member of the Constitutional Affairs and PublicAdministration Select Committees from 2005, and Chair of the All-Party Sex Equality and Children in Wales Groups from 2001 and the Gypsy and Traveller Law Reform and PLP Welsh Regional Groups from 2005. Politically she was heavily involved in the fields of women’s rights, the welfare of children, and black and minority ethnic and disabled people’s rights. According to ‘dodonline’ her countries of interest are Nicaragua, Ethiopia,Iran and India.
The Guardian quoted her on her proudest achievement in Parliament: “After devolution Welsh Westminster MPs have a key role to play in passing new Welsh legislation. I have helped push through a path-breaking measure to create an independent children’s commissioner for Wales. This is unique to Wales and I believe the other parts of theUKare likely to follow.”
Since May 2011 she has been Member for Cardiff North in the Welsh Assembly, where she serves on three committees: Children and Young People, Finance, and Public Accounts.
