Welcome for name change of government group

27 May, 2009

The BHA has welcomed the news that the government’s ‘Interdepartmental Group on Faith’ has renamed itself the ‘Interdepartmental Group on Religion and Belief.’ This group brings together civil servants from across Whitehall to oversee departments’ consultations with representative bodies for faith communities and people without religious beliefs around policy areas including equality, community work and services, and to share good practice.

Local Campaigns Officer, Pepper Harow, stated, “This shows a commitment to be inclusive and a recognition that non-religious beliefs are also important and should be considered when discussing policy and government work.  This also brings the group into line with equality legislation which covers both religious and non-religious beliefs equally.”

The British Humanist Association represents and supports the non-religious. It is the largest organisation in the UK campaigning for an end to religious privilege and to discrimination based on religion or belief, and for a secular state.
