The BHA has today expressed its continuing support for science writer Simon Singh who is fighting an ongoing legal battle having been sued by the British Chiropractic Association. (BCA) The BCA look legal action after Dr Singh wrote an article in The Guardian newspaper criticising various claims made about the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment.
The BHA has been following the case as it brings up many questions regarding free speech and the ability of scientists to freely carry out research and add to open debates. The judgement today means that Dr Singh is now able to continue his defence in the courts.
BHA Head of Public Affairs Naomi Phillips commented, ‘We couldn’t be more delighted for Simon. The ruling is a big step forward in his case; one which raises so many important and relevant issues regarding the rights of scientists to freely question unscientific claims.
‘However, this is not the end of the story by any means. There is an urgent need for reform of libel law in the UK to prevent similar cases preventing people from accessing important information about healthcare.’
