From 2 April, Centre for Inquiry, London – the UK affiliate of the US-based Center for Inquiry (CFI) – is to cease trading and a new Centre for Inquiry UK (CFI UK) will be inaugurated as a section of the British Humanist Association and the sole UK affiliate of CFI.
BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson welcomed the establishment of the new section, ‘This is a great development for Humanism, skepticism and reason in the UK. The British Humanist Association is trusted by over 28,000 members and supporters and over 90 local and special interest affiliates to promote Humanism, support and represent the non-religious, and promote a secular state. Within our broader network we already support the national network for atheist, humanist and secularist student groups and the Humanist Ceremonies network of funeral, wedding and baby-naming celebrants. With the addition of Centre for Inquiry UK as a section, the range and reach of the activities we sponsor and promote will be very beneficially expanded.’
Stephen Law, Provost of the new CFI UK, expressed his own delight at the move, ‘Our popular talks and lectures at both Conway Hall in London and at the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival have been a highlight of our first two years as an independent organisation. We look forward to building on this great foundation as a part of the British Humanist Association.’
