Humanists UK is inviting applications for supporters to join its Humanists for a Better World steering group, as part of a push towards greater community activism on environmental, peace, and global justice issues.
The move coincides with the recent Reykjavik Declaration on the Climate Change Crisis, which was passed unanimously by the leaders of the global humanist movement at the Humanists International General Assembly in Iceland in June 2019. The statement acknowledges the ‘overwhelming scientific consensus’ on climate change and calls on humanist organisations everywhere to ‘foster a social and political commitment to urgent action and long-term policymaking to mitigate and prevent climate change.’
Since 2011, Humanists for a Better World has brought together Humanists UK members and supporters to campaign together on these issues, and has represented Humanists UK in dealings with other members of the Climate Coalition. It has been led jointly by education campaigner Marilyn Mason and the moral philosopher Professor Richard Norman. Now Humanists for a Better World is forming its first steering group to help amplify its voice and upscale its work.
Commenting on plans for the network, Humanists UK Director of Public Affairs and Policy Richy Thompson said:

Whether it’s in our work for inclusive schools, to bring about a secular state, for equality and human rights more broadly, or through volunteer-led initiatives like Humanists for a Better World, we are an organisation that is putting forward a positive vision for a better society, championing ideas for the one life we have.
‘As the climate change crisis becomes more and more pressing, it is essential that a humanist voice is heard. Through Humanists for a Better World, we intend to play a bigger part in today’s big conversations about how best to preserve our planet and its fragile ecosystem.’
