‘Evolution or Extinction?’: title announced for Darwin Day Lecture 2020

16 December, 2019

On 12 February 2020 at the Troxy Theatre in London, nearly 2,000 people are expected to commemorate the life and work of Charles Darwin with a special lecture from naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham CBE, chaired by Humanists UK’s President, Professor Alice Roberts.

Chris’s talk will be titled ‘Evolution or Extinction: will humanity survive the 21st century?’ and will address the existential threats posed to humanity by the impending climate crisis. Chris’s lecture will pose the question: Are we beyond the point of no return? Are global plans to ‘de-carbonise’ sufficient or credible?

Every year, the Darwin Day Lecture explores humanism and humanist thought as related to science and evolution. For Darwin Day 2020, Chris Packham will explore how humanity has transcended the ‘survival of the fittest’ through scientific, medical, and economic advances, while arguing that ‘cultural evolution’ remains the predominant way in which humanity is changing, and how we must utilise this phenomenon to save ourselves from extinction.

Chris Packham CBE has gained recognition as a naturalist, television presenter, writer, photographer, conservationist, campaigner, and filmmaker. He will be immediately recognisable as the presenter of the BBC’s BAFTA-winning Springwatch, Autumnwatch, and Winterwatch series. He is a passionate speaker on climate change, and was awarded a CBE in May 2019 for his services to nature and conservation.

The Darwin Day Lecture explores humanism and humanist thought as related to science and evolution, Charles Darwin, or his works. The Darwin Day medallist has made a significant contribution in one of these fields. Chris Packham is set to receive the second ever Humanists UK Darwin Day medal. 2000 people attended Humanist UK’s 2019 Darwin Day Lecture and tickets for 2020 are expected to sell fast.
