John Fowles (1926 – 2005)

Novelist and Patron of Humanists UK

Humanists UK was sorry to hear of the death of novelist John Fowles in November 2005. Though many of the obituaries described him as a recluse in recent years, he was very hospitable and kind to our Education Officer when she interviewed him in 1999 for the I-Seek CD-ROM Living without God (available from Humanists UK shop at https://humanism.org.uk/shop?page=3). He was happy to talk about his humanist beliefs and particularly his love of nature and intellectual debt to E O Wilson. His warm welcome and a heady conversation which began in his lovely garden (recorded on the CD-ROM) and continued in his kitchen are fondly remembered.
