Last year’s protests in Birmingham against LGBT inclusive education were just the latest example of the tensions that can arise when people expect the public education system to work in line with their private religious beliefs. In a plural society you cannot give preference a particular viewpoint without potentially alienating others. In this session Dr Ruth Wareham, Humanist UK’s Education Campaigns Manager, explains the benefits of a secular education system and argues that ultimately such a system is better for all children.
