September 14th, 2019 7:00 PM   --   10:30 PM

After a fantastic comedy night fundraiser in Belfast earlier this year, Young Humanists are coming to London, with Laugh at First Sight: A comedy night in support of humanist marriage. Join us on 14 September at the Ovalhouse Theatre for an unforgettable evening.

BOOK NOW

We'll be treated to sets from some of the leading lights of the comedy circuit, and hear from the humanist campaigners battling for a kinder, more rational, more tolerant society. And it's all for a good cause – all proceeds raised will be put towards our campaign to give humanist weddings in England and Wales legal recognition.

Our comedy nights are a celebration of some of the best things about being a young humanist – laughter, community, and campaigning for a better world.

Spaces for this intimate comedy night are limited, and tickets are going fast. Get yours now.

MATT FORDE

Matt Forde (@MattForde) is one of the country’s most in-demand satirists, having appeared on The Royal Variety Performance 2015, Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week, 8 out of 10 Cats, Question Time, This Week, and Jon Richardson Grows Up.

2015 saw Matt take his sell-out, critically-acclaimed 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show '24-Hour Political Party People' for a week-long run at the Soho Theatre, and tour it nationwide. He returned to the Edinburgh Festival in 2015 with 'Get the Political Party Started', which enjoyed a sell-out run, before going on to run for a week at Soho Theatre and a nationwide tour.

Matt’s monthly residency in London, The Political Party, regularly sells-out Westminster theatre The Other Palace. Alongside Matt’s trademark up-to-the-minute current affairs stand-up, the show brings Parliament to life as Matt interviews some of politics’ most significant characters. Past guests have included Tony Blair, Dame Tessa Jowell, Nigel Farage, Stella Creasy, and David Davis.

AND THE SERIOUS BIT

We have long campaigned for reform of marriage laws – in order to gain legal recognition for both humanist and same-sex marriage ceremonies. Humanist marriages are now legally recognised in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Jersey, as well as in neighbouring countries like the Republic of Ireland, with Guernsey currently in the process of extending legal recognition too. But to date there is still no recognition of our wedding ceremonies in England and Wales or the Isle of Man.

In England and Wales, the Marriage Act 2013 created a new category of legally recognised marriage in England and Wales – ‘marriages according to the usages of belief based organisations’. This category was created by the UK Parliament so that the Government could enact legal recognition to humanist marriages by secondary legislation. But in the many years since, the Government has still not enacted this. With over 1,000 couples a year already having humanist wedding ceremonies that are not legally recognised, we are urging the UK Government to act swiftly and bring about legal recognition.

All proceeds raised at this event will go to support our campaign for the legal recognition of humanist marriage.
