Baroness Joan Bakewell is a Labour peer, and co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG). Since entering Parliament in 2011, she has promoted humanist and liberal ideas, and the arts. She has also stood up for the poor and vulnerable, throughout more than 140 speeches in the House of Lords.

Joan is a journalist and TV presenter, who has shown a willingness to shed light on social issues and an eagerness to push the envelope – even on sensitive topics – when it is the right thing to do. She has led some of the BBC’s most well-remembered documentaries and news programmes, challenging taboos around sex; examining religion from a critical, objective standpoint; and being a champion for arts and culture and their relevance to life.

For inspiring the British public, and working to champion ideas for a better society in homes across the country and in the halls of Westminster; and for a lifetime of support for women’s rights, social equality, and good causes, Joan was named Humanist of the Year in November 2017.
